WWE superstar John Cena shocked the fans when he betrayed Cody Rhodes and joined hands with the Rock a few weeks ago. The WWE universe was taken aback by his decision to turn ‘heel’ during his farewell tour with the company. On this week’s Raw, Cena came out to address the situation when he was interrupted by Cody, who walked out to an entire arena singing his entry music. What followed was a verbal feud between the two before Cena tried to attack Rhodes but instead got nailed by the latter’s finisher move, the ‘Cross-Rhodes’.
Just like Eminem in the final battle of 8 Mile, Rhodes proceeded to list out everything Cena could use to make fun of him. He mentioned his lisp, his former gimmick Stardust, and his American Nightmare tattoo. Cody said, “Perhaps, I’m struggling with the idea that Superman is really dead, which would bring me to my next point. I think for the last two weeks you have lied to this audience. I know you cared about me at one point, but I know for sure you cared about them (audience) at one point, so take the opportunity and tell everyone, Why?”
Cena responded that he does not feel the need for making fun of Cody because he wants to “bury” him, just like he has been accused of burying talent all these years. “I don’t bury talent; I bury mediocrity,” he said. He added that Rhodes was nothing but his chauffeur and that he rode his coattails all the way to the top. “Because you’re too afraid to show your true self, we got a generic mix of every superstar he has ever loved, and it makes you look like a 16-year-old kid taking acting lessons who is still afraid of public speaking. I have worked too hard to make that (WWE title) a symbol of mastery for it to be paraded around by a paint-by-numbers, sociopathic nepo-baby,” added Cena.
Cody Rhodes mentioned that he was chosen by the audience, whereas Cena was chosen by someone sitting in an office who is not even here anymore: “If any of us is the creation of a company, it’s you, not me.” Rhodes brought up Cena’s betrayal and said, “Between you and me, who sold out to The Rock?” to which the entire crowd started chanting the words “you sold out.”
Before walking out of the ring, Rhodes said that in all his time in the company, no crowd has ever chanted ‘you can’t wrestle’ pointing at him, and Cena decided to sneak in a shot, but Rhodes was ready for it and reversed it into his finisher ‘Cross Rhodes’.
The pair will face each other at WrestleMania 41 for the WWE Championship, which is going to be held in Las Vegas on April 19 and 20. WrestleMania 41 will stream on Netflix.
