The controversy traces back to a 2022 Fox News interview where Vance criticised left-liberal ideologies, referring to some Democrats and their allies as “childless cat ladies” who, he claimed, were driven by personal dissatisfaction and aimed to spread misery. The remarks, which resurfaced recently, have been met with strong reactions, particularly from those who felt marginalized by his words.
On NBC’s Meet the Press, Vance said that he acknowledged the confusion his comments have caused, expressing regret that many interpreted them negatively. He also criticized the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Vice President Kamala Harris for what he described as misrepresentations of his words. Despite this, Vance emphasised he had no regrets about the substance of his remarks.
“Look, I certainly regret that a lot of people took it the wrong way, and I certainly regret the DNC and Kamala Harris lied about it,” Vance told NBC’s Kristen Welker. However, he maintained that his comments were intended as a joke.
Vance framed his controversial joke within a larger context, arguing that it was meant to highlight serious issues regarding family dynamics and economic challenges in the US. He stressed that the high costs of housing and groceries, and what he perceives as an anti-family culture, are central to his policy agenda.
“I’m a real person. I’m going to make jokes, I’m going to say things sarcastically. And I think that what’s important is that we focus on the policy,” Vance said.
“I think it’s most important to actually be the person I actually am, and to say those sarcastic comments were made in the service of a real substantive point. This country has become too anti-family. It’s too expensive to afford a house. It’s too expensive to afford groceries. Donald Trump and I want to change that. And unless we get better leadership, we’re not going to,” he added.
When asked about the impact of his comments on women who might feel hurt or offended, Vance reiterated that while he does have regrets, his “childless cat lady” comment was not among his top concerns.
“I have a lot of regrets, Kristen, but making a joke three years ago is not at the top 10 of the list,” Vance said
