Mumbai Indians Cape Town vs Joburg Super Kings

Mumbai Indians Cape Town claimed their second home win of the SA20 season with a clinical dismantling of the Joburg Super Kings to climb provisionally to the top of the standings. The hosts sussed out the conditions early and strangulated a struggling batting line-up on a two-paced Newlands track, keeping them down to a paltry 105. They missed out on the Bonus Point but walked the chase home with seven wickets and 22 balls to spare.

Kagiso Rabada set the ball rolling for the hosts by cleaning up Reeza Hendricks cheaply. By the PowerPlay, the Super Kings had also managed to send back Janeman Malan and Kyle Verreynne with George Linde claiming both those wickets as Rashid Khan unleashed a full-throated spin attack. Waqar Salamkheil then landed the big wicket of Faf du Plessis as JSK crawled to 53/4 after the first 10 overs. There was no coming back from there as Odean Smith and Rashid Khan claimed two wickets apiece before the final-wicket pair of George Garton and Aaron Phangiso saved some blushes with a 21-run stand to take the total past 100.

MI Cape Town operated in cruise mode in the chase with Dewald Brevis hitting three sixes and a pair of fours in his knock of 42. After an opening stand of 65 in under nine overs, the hosts slowed down through the middle as Rassie van der Dussen found it tough to find his timing but there were never going to be any further obstacles in polishing off the game.

Brief scores:Joburg Super Kings 105/9 in 20 overs (Leus du Plooy 21; Kagiso Rabada 2-12, Rashid Khan 2-18) lost to MI Cape Town 107/3 in 16.2 overs (Dewald Brevis 42; Gerald Coetzee 2-24) by seven wickets.

Pretoria Capitals vs Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Will Jacks’ breezy 46-ball 92 turned out to be the cornerstone of Pretoria Capitals’ 37-run victory against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Centurion. Eastern Cape managed 179 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs in a chase of 217.

Jacks cracked as many as seven boundaries and eight sixes and also strung together an alliance of 111 with Theunis de Bruyn (23-ball 42) for the third wicket to set the foundation for a massive score. Jacks and De Bruyn fell in quick succession to Marco Jansen and Sisanda Magala respectively. Jimmy Neesham and Shane Dadswell then made useful contributions to take the side past the 200-run mark.

For Eastern Cape, Ottniel Baartman and Magala shared a couple of scalps each. In pursuit of a substantial target, Eastern Cape lost Jordan Cox and Saral Erwee early. Aiden Markram, batting at No.4, composed a 29-ball 46 but didn’t get much support from the rest of the batting unit. In fact, among Eastern Cape’s top seven, JJ Smuts was the only other batter to cross the 20-run (28 runs) mark for the side.

Lower down the order, Marco Jansen and Brydon Carse stitched a quick-fire unbeaten alliance of 60 in just under five overs but by then Eastern Cape’s chances of winning the game had all but gone. For Capitals, Wayne Parnell and Adil Rashid took a couple of wickets each.

Brief scores: Pretoria Capitals 216/6 in 20 overs (Will Jacks 92; Sisanda Magala 2-28) beat Sunrisers Eastern Cape 179/7 in 20 overs (Aiden Markram 46; Wayne Parnell 2-20) by 37 runs.
