Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 Pro Max , the successor to last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max , in the second half of 2023. The company is rumoured to include a periscope camera in this year’s high-end flagship phone, unlike previous Pro iPhone models. According to a fresh report, Apple intends to reconfigure the rear camera system on the iPhone 15 Pro Max in order to accommodate the periscope lens, which enhances the telephoto camera’s zoom power.
Tipster Unknownz21 took to his Twitter handle (@URedditor) to claim that the Cupertino-based company will redesign the triple rear camera layout on the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max . As per the tipster, the placements of the telephoto and ultra-wide-angle cameras will allegedly be swapped. On the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the camera between the LiDAR and the LED flash will have a periscope lens, whereas, on the iPhone 15 Pro, it will have a regular telephoto lens.

Given that Apple has not yet revealed any intentions to improve the zoom capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, it is wise to treat these claims with a grain of salt. According to Vadim Yuryev of Max Tech, the periscope lens on the upcoming smartphone will need to be positioned above the primary camera and below the ultra-wide-angle camera because there isn’t enough room in either of the other two positions for it.

In comparison to a standard telephoto camera, a periscope camera system allows for a greater distance between the image sensor and the lens but also occupies more horizontal space. As a result, other parts will need to be shifted in order to accommodate the addition of a periscope lens.

According to Yuryev, Apple is unable to place the periscope lens at the bottom of the camera module due to the battery placement underneath the bottom lens and the LiDAR scanner. According to him, the smaller iPhone 15 Pro won’t have enough room to modify the logic board design to suit the new lens layout. This will be achievable with the middle lens position.

Apple had previously also been rumoured to include a periscope lens in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The upcoming device is anticipated to feature a periscope camera lens with capabilities for up to 6x optical zoom, according to a report from last month. The speculated amount is still less than the 10x optical zoom on the periscope camera of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra . As already mentioned, Apple has not yet provided any information regarding its plans to offer a periscope lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
