Social media influencer, Akash Sagar, has found himself in the middle of a storm after a video of him chanting “Jai Shri Ram” inside a church in Meghalaya went viral.
The incident, which took place at the Church of Epiphany in Mawlynnong, has led to an FIR being filed against him for trespassing and disrespecting religious sentiments.

Many netizens have slammed Akash, accusing him of exploiting religion for fame. Comments like “This is what happens when political parties promote religion-based politics” and “Does chanting slogans in churches and mosques make someone more Hindu?” flooded social media platforms.
Some users even called him a representative of “ill-mannered, WhatsApp university-educated youth.”

The act has been widely condemned by Christian organizations in Meghalaya. The Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders’ Forum labeled the video as “provocative and perverse,” accusing Akash of trying to disrupt communal harmony. A local activist, Angela Rangad, who filed the complaint, called the act “premeditated and disrespectful to the Christian faith.”
Meanwhile, Akash defended himself on social media, questioning the backlash and calling his critics “traitors.” However, his response only added fuel to the fire, with many accusing him of exploiting religion for attention and popularity.

This incident has sparked a massive debate about the growing trend of influencers using religious slogans for their personal gain. Critics argue that such acts don’t reflect true faith but are attempts to attract followers and gain viral fame.
