Another day, another shameful scam involving an Indian student comes to light. Mahendra Darbar, who is in the U.S. on a student visa, posed as a cop and attempted to steal tens of thousands of dollars from a 71-year-old victim, Jose Lopez.
Mahendra traveled from Pennsylvania to New Mexico to carry out this scam. According to U.S. media, the victim had withdrawn $73,590 to hand over to the Indian student.

The victim’s family has opened a GoFundMe page seeking financial help for the 71-year-old, who lost his hard-earned savings intended for retirement and medical expenses.
Reports indicate that the Indian student threatened the victim, claiming there were financial irregularities in his accounts and warning that he would be jailed if he did not pay. Posing as a cop, Mahendra conducted the scam over several days, ultimately deceiving the victim.

Mahendra admitted to investigators that he receives such “jobs” from WhatsApp groups and carries them out.
