The Indian government has made it more difficult for the NRIs to get classified as Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). The move has given the Indian diaspora a major setback with many feeling disappointed.
Under the new regulations, Indians residing in other countries must provide more documentation to prove their Indian origin. This includes additional identity verification and proof of their parents’ and grandparents’ Indian citizenship.

This means the NRIs that once got the same privileges as Indian citizens are now in danger of being classified as “foreign nationals.” They will no longer be able to travel to India freely and must get permission just like any other foreigner.
NRIs have often been the bridge between India and the world all the while contributing to the Indian economy. This is why they feel betrayed by the Indian government after this new ruling.

The community is demanding a review and reconsideration of the policy to make it more accessible for them. It is already a laborious process for Indian nationals to apply for citizenship and visas abroad, thus, receiving the same treatment from their home country is the last thing they need.
