Indian Cinema Legend Shyam Bengal Passes Away

Legendary filmmaker and screenwriter Shyam Bengal passes away today after days of suffering from a chronic kidney-related disease.

The veteran filmmaker celebrated his 90th birthday on Saturday, December 14th, with friends from the fraternity, and 9 days later, he’s no more.

Benegal created the “new wave of cinema” and will always be remembered as the man who changed the direction of Indian cinema.

He was one of the most prolific directors India has had, greatly contributing to the parallel film movement in India.

His artistic vision was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991.

The pioneer directed many films which changed the course of Indian cinema. Films like Ankur, Manthan, Zubeidaa and Sardaari Begum were critically acclaimed.

His other films like Mandi, Kalyug, Nishan, Junoon, and Sooraj Ka Satvan Ghoda, are considered cult classics.

Bengal was said to be working on three projects, all for the big screens.

His latest film was the 2023 biographical ‘Mujib: The Making of a Nation’.

His contributions to cinema and storytelling were vast. From films to TV shows, he tried his hand at everything. While he made films on diverse social issues, he made documentaries and television serials, including ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ and ‘Samvidhaan’.

Bengal had started his career as a copywriter and soon won over the hearts of the audience with his stories.

He will always have a special place in the hearts of the audience. His contribution will be incomparable.
