India Flights 200% Costlier! Why So Expensive?

Flight ticket prices in India have gone up sharply. A Twitter user pointed out that a one-way flight from Delhi to Bengaluru, which cost ₹3.5k in 2022, now costs ₹8.5k even with advance booking. Many are wondering why fares are so high and whether airlines are overcharging.

Some people believe airlines are taking advantage of their market power. With fewer competitors after mergers and shutdowns, major airlines like Indigo and Air India now dominate the market. Without budget carriers like Ryan Air to keep fares low, airlines can charge more because travelers have no choice.

Others argue that rising costs are forcing airlines to increase prices. The biggest factor is Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), which makes up 35%-40% of airline costs. Since 2019, ATF prices have risen by over 35% due to global issues like the Russia-Ukraine war. Even with expensive tickets, many airlines are still losing money.

Some experts suggest an airline fare regulatory authority to control extreme price hikes. However, others believe that market demand determines prices. If fewer people book flights, airlines will lower fares.

The reality is a mix of both arguments. High fuel costs make flying more expensive, but fewer airlines also mean less competition, allowing prices to stay high. A balance is needed to make air travel affordable while keeping airlines in business.
