India and US Trade War: Situation Really Bad?

The newly elected US congressman, Suhas Subramanyam has raised serious concerns about Donald Trump’s new trade policies, especially targeting India.

Going against the new US President’s plan to impose higher tariffs on imports, the Indian-American representative even warned of a trade war between India and the US. This follows Trump calling India an “abuser” of trade relations even before he was elected.

India and the US share deep economic ties, with businesses on both sides benefiting from mutual growth. Therefore, such shortsighted policies with a motive of exacting revenge can have adverse effects on both countries.

Following the elections, Suhas became the sixth member of the “Samosa Caucus,” an unofficial group of elected Indian-origin leaders. These members usually focus on immigration issues and building strong ties between India and the US.

As a representative of the Democratic Party, Suhas not only opposes Trump’s aggressive economic programmes but also his strict immigration policies.

Although Trump maintains a great relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his future plans might put tensions between the two leaders. India might be forced to impose similar regulations in return if the need arises.
