Menstrual Leave: Supreme Court’s Crucial Comments

The government of Odisha gave a gift to women on the occasion of Independence Day. The government introduced a one-day menstrual leave (period leaves) policy every month for women.

This rule will be applicable to women working in both private and government organizations. Deputy Chief Minister Parvati Parida announced this news at the Independence Day celebrations held in Cuttack.

She stated that the policy will come into effect immediately. It was stated that women can take leave either on the first or second day of their menstrual period. Parvati Parida stated that the decision has been taken with women’s health and well-being in mind.

The Odisha government took this bold decision while debates were ongoing across the country regarding menstrual leave.

In 2022, a bill was proposed for three-day menstrual leave for women every month. However, the bill wasn’t approved.

Recently, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition to mandate menstrual leave in the workplace, citing concerns that such a mandate could lead to women being excluded from the workplace.

Meanwhile, the Bihar government has been giving two-day menstrual leave for government employees since 1992. Even the Kerala government has been giving three-day menstrual leave to female students.

Various educational institutions like NALSAR University in Hyderabad, Guwahati University in Assam, Tezpur University, and Chandigarh’s Punjab University are also giving menstrual leave to female students.
