The Indian subsidiary of the South Korean automotive giant Hyundai, Hyundai Motor India, recently commenced bookings for its newest micro-SUV, the Exter. The company showcased its exterior design with this announcement and stated that interested customers can reserve the Exter for Rs 11,000. Now according to Autocar India, the company is planning to launch the model by the middle of July this year, with production commencing in early July and deliveries starting in August.
The company also recently announced the powertrain options for the Exter. It stated that a 1.2L Kappa Petrol engine, which is now E20 Fuel Ready, will be offered with the forthcoming SUV. This engine is the same as the one used in the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. The available transmissions for this engine are a 5-speed manual transmission and Smart Auto AMT. Additionally, there will be a 1.2L Bi-fuel Kappa petrol with CNG available.
According to the company, the Exter will be offered in 13 petrol variants. The list of these variants includes EX MT, S MT, S(O) MT, S AMT, SX MT, SX Dual Tone MT, SX AMT, SX Dual Tone AMT, SX(O), SX(O) AMT, SX(O) Connect, and SX(O) Connect AMT. Meanwhile, the 2 CNG variants will be S MT and SX MT. The company has not yet announced any power specifications for both of the powertrains, but it is anticipated that the petrol engine will be able to produce a maximum of 83 PS of power and 113.8 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the CNG variant will be able to generate 95.2 Nm of torque and a maximum output of 69 PS.

Hyundai also revealed that the Exter will be offered with 26 safety features across all variants and as an option in the entry-level E and S trims. The safety features of the forthcoming SUV will include ESC (Electronic Stability Control), VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), HAC (Hill Assist Control), 3-Point Seat Belt & seatbelt reminder (all seats), ABS with EBD, Burglar Alarm (1st in Segment), and more. The Exter will also be the only car in the segment to offer features like a built-in dashboard camera and TPMS. Other advanced safety features include ISOFIX anchors, headlamp escort function, rear parking camera, and others.
As of yet, the company has not shared any details about the Exter’s interior or features, but it is expected that the company will offer a host of them. Most likely, the micro-SUV will come with a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, and LED headlights. The top-of-the-line trims could also come equipped with premium features like powered and ventilated front seats, rear AC vents, a comprehensive 360-degree camera system, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
The company has not revealed any details about the pricing of this new SUV as of now, but it is expected to cost in the range of Rs 6-10 lakh. When it goes on sale, the major competitor for this SUV will be Tata Motors’ popular micro-SUV, the Punch. The Exter will also compete with Citroen’s compact SUV C3, as well as lesser-equipped variants of the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Fronx.
