Expedite research on medicinal usage of cannabis: Science and Technology Minister
Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday urged scientists to expedite research on cannabis and explore its medicinal capabilities in curing neuropathies, cancer and epilepsy.
Singh was chairing a meeting to review the ‘Cannabis Research Project’ undertaken by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM) in Jammu.
The minister said the project is “first of its kind in India” and has the potential to “produce export quality medicine for neuropathies, cancer and epilepsy”.
This project will give an impetus for huge investment opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir, he added.

West Bengal panchayat polls to be held in single phase on July 8, votes to be counted on July 11
The three-tier panchayat polls in West Bengal will be held on July 8, State Election Commissioner Rajiva Sinha said on Thursday.
“The panchayat polls will be held on July 8. The last date for filing nominations is June 15. The last date of withdrawal of nominations is June 20,” Sinha told a press conference here.
Sinha, however, evaded a direct reply on whether the elections would be held under the supervision of central forces as demanded by opposition parties.

The much anticipated 71st edition of Miss World is expected to take place in November this year, the final dates of which are yet to be ascertained.

Manoj Sane, a 56-year-old man from Mumbai, allegedly killed his live-in partner 32-year-old Saraswati Vaidya and then chopped her body and boiled it in a pressure cooker to dissolve them before disposal.
While Mumbai Police recovered several plastic bags containing the remains of Vaidya’s body, accused Manoj Sane denied killing Saraswati and claimed she consumed poison on June 4. Then why did Manoj chop her body parts?
Manoj Sane told the police he was scared after he found Saraswati dead and wanted to get rid of the body. Manoj Sane was arrested on Wednesday night and was produced in a court on Thursday where he was remanded to eight-day police custody.

Air India will be refunding the full amount to all the passengers who have been affected by the diversion of the Delhi-San Francisco flight, which was carrying 216 passengers and had landed in San Francisco (SFO) at 12:07am (12:37pm IST) on Thursday two days after they had been left stranded in Magadan, a remote Russian town following an emergency landing due to a technical fault.
Air India Chief Customer Experience and Ground Handling Officer Rajesh Dogra on Thursday said, “We will fully refund the fare for the journey and, in addition, provide a voucher for future travel to the passengers on Air India.”

The southwest monsoon made progress into the remaining areas of the south Arabian Sea and certain parts of the central Arabian Sea, IMD said on Thursday. It also covered the entire Lakshadweep region, most parts of Kerala, most parts of south Tamil Nadu, remaining portions of the Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar, and additional areas of the southwest, central, and northeast Bay of Bengal.
The onset of the southwest monsoon has occurred in Kerala Thursday against the normal date of June 1.
