1. Karnataka winter session: Marathon Assembly session stretches till nearly 1 a.m.
The Karnataka Legislative Assembly witnessed a marathon session on Monday (December 16, 2024), transacting till 12.50 a.m. of Tuesday (December 17, 2024) in Belagavi. The session that began around 10.30 a.m. went on till the wee hours of Tuesday, which included lunch break for an hour.
The House took up the question hour late in the night. Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda replied on behalf of the government on not just revenue issues, but also regarding almost all other subjects including the Finance Department. In all, 60 calling attention notices, 15 questions, three medium-term debates and 11 bills were taken up by the House since evening.
2. Former CM Nijalingappa’s house to be made into monument, district administration to oversee restoration
The house of late Karnataka CM S. Nijalingappa was handed over to Chitradurga district administration on December 16, for converting the same into a monument. Trustee of S. Nijalingappa Memorial Trust K.E.B. Shanmukhappa handed over the keys of his residence at V.P. Extension in Chitradurga to Deputy Commissioner T. Venkatesh and Additional DC B.T. Kumaraswamy.
As per the estimate of the Public Works Department, the house was purchased at a price of ₹4,18,49,016 from Mr. Nijalingappa’s legal heirs. The remaining ₹80 lakh will be utilised for civil works. The photographs, gifts and other articles used by Mr. Nijalingappa would be preserved with the help of archaeological experts and the house would be converted into a monument and museum.
3. Winter is here, Bengaluru!
Winter has truly set in Bengaluru as the city for the last couple of days has been witnessing chilly weather conditions. The minimum temperature has dropped to 15 °C. According to the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD), Bengaluru’s observation data recorded at 8.30 a.m. on December 17, the minimum temperature in Bengaluru city was 15.5 °C.
The two other observatories the HAL Airport and the Kempegowda International Airport also recorded a minimum of 15 °C respectively. The average minimum temperature in Bengaluru for the month of December is 16.4 °C. As per IMD records, the all-time lowest minimum temperature recorded for the month December was 8.9 °C recorded on December 29, 1883.
4. Mangaluru court sentences five persons to one year rigorous imprisonment for child marriage
The Additional District Sessions Judge, Fast Track Sessions Court-2, Mangaluru, has sentenced 29-year-old Mohammed Imthiyaaz — who married a minor girl — his parents and the girl’s parents to one year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a total fine of ₹25,000. They were found guilty of getting a child marriage done.
The judge imposed a fine of ₹5,000 each on Imthiyaaz, his parents K.A. Mohammed and Mymuna and the 17-year-old girl’s parents Abdul Khadar and Ramlath. Imthiyaaz was convicted for the offence punishable under Section 9 of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The rest were convicted for the offences punishable under Sections 10 and 11 of PCMA.
