Heavy rain forces prison officials to shift inmates to Perurani district jail in Thoothukudi district

As a preventive step 25 prisoners from Srivaikuntam sub jail were shifted to the Perurani district jail in Thoothukudi.

The Thoothukudi district has been experiencing heavy downpour since Thursday (December 12, 2024) morning. Torrential rain in the western ghats had led to a significant inflow of water into the Tamirabharani river causing it to overflowing banks. In view of the situation, a flood alert was issued by the district administration.

An official from the department stated that 25 prisoners from the Srivaikuntam jail were relocated to the Perurani jail on Thursday (December 12, 2024) evening around 6:30 p.m.. An Inspector along with 30 police personnel was deployed to ensure the safe shifting of the inmates.

The prisoners will be shifted back to the Srivaikuntam sub jail once the current flood alert is lifted, the official added.
