Apple seems to have made a huge change to its standard warranty policy for the iPhone and the Apple Watch. According to a new report by 9to5Mac citing multiple sources, the Cupertino-based tech giant will no longer cover “single hairline cracks” on the screens of its smartphones and smartwatches under the normal warranty. Instead it will be labelled as “accidental damage”.

This simply means users will now have to pay to get these devices fixed. Up until now, Apple treated single hairline cracks under its standard warranty policy as long as there was no other visible damage.

The report suggests that Apple Stores and Apple authorized service providers were notified of the change in its standard warranty policy sometime this week. As of now, the warranty policy change is only applicable to the iPhone and the Apple Watch. iPad and Mac owners can still claim the standard warranty to fix single hairline cracks.

However, Apple has yet to clarify why it has decided to make such a significant change in its warranty policy. For vanilla iPhone 15 and iPhone SE (3rd generation), Apple charges Rs 25,500 and Rs 13,200, respectively, for screen replacement, but the price comes down to Rs 2,500 if you are covered under Apple Care Plus.
