Hafiz Saeed’s son in poll fray: Pakistan mainstreaming terror, says India | India News

NEW DELHI: With UN-designated terrorist Hafiz Saeed’s son Talha Saeed contesting elections in Pakistan, the government slammed Islamabad for mainstreaming and normalisation of extremist elements, saying it would have implications for the region’s security. The government also officially confirmed that it recently sought Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed’s extradition to India.
In response to queries on India’s request to extradite Saeed, Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said: “Pakistan has received a request from the Indian authorities, seeking extradition of Hafiz Saeed in a so-called money laundering case. It’s pertinent to note that no bilateral extradition treaty exists between Pakistan and India.”
Recalling that Hafiz was wanted in numerous cases in India, the MEA spokesperson said that he was also a UN-proscribed terrorist.“The mainstreaming of radical terrorist outfits in Pakistan is nothing new and has been a part of the state policy for a long time. Such developments have serious implications for the security of our region. We will of course continue to monitor all developments that have an implications on our national security,’’ the spokesperson said, replying to a question on Talha Saeed.
On Hafiz Saeed, the spokesperson said, “We have conveyed a request, along with relevant supporting documents, to the government of Pakistan to extradite him to India to face trial in a particular case.’’
Talha Saeed, a senior leader of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and head of its cleric wing, was designated as a terrorist by India last year. Talha has been actively involved in recruitment, fund collection, planning and execution of attacks by LeT in India and on Indian interests in Afghanistan.
