Scammers are now using the Indian Embassy’s name to trap H1B holders in the US. They are making fake calls, threatening arrest, deportation, or visa cancellation through a seemingly “official” number.
These fraudsters spoof the Embassy’s contact, 202-939-7000, to look legitimate. Then they claim there are errors in visa or immigration records and demand money to “fix” them.

The scam was so rampant that it even caught the Indian Embassy’s attention, which has now issued an advisory for all Indian H1B holders.
The Embassy never calls anyone asking for personal details, credit card numbers, or payments. If documents are needed, they contact people only through official emails ending in @mea.gov.in. No exceptions!

Many Indians have reported receiving these scam calls. While some were told there was a police case against them in India, others were threatened with jail if they didn’t pay immediately.
If you get a call like this, do not share information, and definitely do not transfer money. Report it to the Embassy instead.

As the Indian diaspora is already living in fear, these scammers are finding new elaborate ways to prey on the vulnerable. Stay alert and spread the word.
