Indian visitors coming to India for the renewal of their H1B visas are experiencing a new issue. They have “approved” status for their visa after the dropbox appointment, then weeks later their status changes to “refused.”
It’s common for applicants to experience this at U.S. consulates in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi. No explanation is ever given–just a notice stating their application is in “administrative processing.” No time frame. No instructions.

For H1B workers, this uncertainty is a nightmare. A delayed visa can result in loss of employment, missed pay checks, and jeopardizing their future in the U.S. Many remain in India, unable to return, abd unsure how long the wait will last.
The million-dollar question is–why? If the vias was granted in the first place, what happened? Is it a security clearance? A backlog? A new rule? Nobody knows for sure.

Lacking is transparency. Applicants should be informed as to why their visas have been put back and for how long they will have to wait. A “wait and watch” answer is insufficient when one’s career and family hang in balance.
For the time being, the best course of action is to be ready. Anticipate delays, keep records, and stay up to date. Until there are definitive answers, H1B holders will have to figure this out for themselves.
