According to Business Insider, Google was working an internal project called “Iris” which was focused on building new AR glasses. Following the departure of the company’s chief of augmented reality and virtual reality, Clay Bavor and the recent wave of layoffs, the project has now been cancelled.

According to several reports, the search and technology giant was working on the project for several years before it was canned. The company even announced last year that it will commence real world testing new AR-powered glasses with real-time language translation.

With the hardware now shelved, Google will now focus its efforts on expanding Android’s Extended Reality (XR) program that will help third-parties like Samsung build AR/VR headsets for the Android ecosystem. The prototype has reportedly been named “Betty”.
