Google ‘kills’ a popular social media feature for YouTube

Google-owned video streaming platform YouTube introduced the

    Stories

feature in 2017. The feature allowed users to put up temporary posts that will cease to exist in June. “Starting on 6/26/2023 (June 26) the option to create a new

    YouTube Story

will no longer be available. Stories that are already live on that date will expire seven days after they were originally shared,” the company said in a blog post.

YouTube has also shared the reason for ending this feature. The company says that “there are many ways to create on YouTube,” which include long-form,

    Shorts and Live

. “To prioritise these key features, Stories are going away,” added the company. Instead, YouTube is asking content creators to focus on Community posts and YouTube Shorts.

    YouTube’s suggestion for creators

YouTube Community enables creators to share updates, start conversations or promote their YouTube content to their audience. “Amongst creators who use both posts and Stories, posts on average drive many times more comments and likes compared to Stories,” the company noted.

This feature is available for YouTube creators and includes some aspects of Stories. It includes editing tools and the ability for posts to expire after 24 hours. With this feature, creators can use new engagement features including polls, quizzes, filters and stickers.

YouTube has also asked creators to “reach a new audience” with the short video format, Shorts. The company believes that

    Shorts

on average drive many times more subscribers than Stories.

The Shorts camera includes mobile video tools like adding text or filters or editing other content. YouTube promises to bring more engaging features to the Shorts experience. The company recently launched the ability to reply to comments with Shorts.
