Twelve years on from their infamous meeting in the World Cup quarterfinals, Ghana and Uruguay will go head-to-head again today.
In one of the most memorable moments of drama in recent finals, the pair played out a thriller at South Africa 2010, with Uruguay striker Luis Suarez handling a Ghana shot on the line deep into extra time to deliberately prevent the Black Stars from scoring what would have been a winner.
Ghana missed the subsequent spot-kick, and the South Americans went on to win in a penalty shootout to claim a place in the semifinals.
Fast forward to today, and Suarez is expected to be in the Uruguay lineup once again, as both these sides seek a victory that would likely be enough to send them through to the knockout stages in Qatar.
South Korea need a big win against already qualified Portugal in the other Group H fixture to have any say in that.

Ghana vs. Uruguay live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup
3 hrs from kickoff: Ghana have been out for a stroll. “Black Stars walk before the battle,” they’ve captioned this. “Today is the day.”
3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Ghana have scored with five of their six shots on target at the FIFA 2022 World Cup so far, including all three against South Korea last time out.
They can break the record for the most goals they have scored at the tournament (five, in 2010) by finding the back of the net today.
4 hrs from kickoff: Despite the attacking talent within their ranks, Uruguay will make it four hours of football without scoring if they fail to net within the first three minutes of this game.
They haven’t scored in three of their last four matches. And a possible tip for gamblers: both teams haven’t scored in Uruguay’s last nine games – and 12 of their last 13.
4 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Uruguay have used four players aged 35 or older at this tournament – Martín Caceres, Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Diego Godín.
That makes it only the second time a nation has used four players that old at a single edition, along with Panama in 2018.
5 hrs from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of this Group H clash as Ghana go up against Uruguay. This one is a repeat of the infamous meeting between the two sides in the World Cup quarterfinal back in 2010, and ahead of the game the Black Stars have had some support from some unlikely sources! Ghana vs. Uruguay lineups, team news
Diego Alonso is confident he has come up with a tactical plan to beat Ghana and secure passage to the knockout stages of the World Cup.
The Uruguay boss has used two different formations across the first two games — a dour 0-0 draw with South Korea and 2-0 defeat to Portugal.
But, whatever shape they line up in, he expects his team to be fully prepared to exploit Ghana’s weaknesses on Friday.
He said: “We know where we have to aim and what we have to do. We are going to give everything in the next game to qualify.”

Ghana predicted starting 11
(4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. Ati-Zigi (GK) — 2. Lamptey, 18. Amartey, 4. Salisu, 14. Mensah — 5. Partey, 21. Abdul Samed — 20. Kudus, 10. A. Ayew, 9. J. Ayew — 19. Williams
- Injured: None
- Suspended: None
After his side kept their hopes of progression alive with a 3-2 win over South Korea last time out, Otto Addo could be tempted to stick with the same 11.
That would mean Gideon Mensah, Tariq Lamptey and Jordan Ayew all retaining their places after missing out on the defeat to Portugal that kicked off Ghana’s tournament.

Uruguay predicted starting 11
(3-5-2, right to left): 23. Rochet (GK) — 2. Gimenez, 3. Godin, 19. Coates —13. Varela, 15. Valverde, 6. Bentancur, 5. Vecino, 16. Olivera — 11. Nunez, 9. Suarez.
- Injured: Araujo
- Suspended: None
Although a switch to a 3-5-2 didn’t quite pay dividends against Portugal, Alonso may stick with the same shape and try partnering Luis Suarez with Darwin Nunez this time around hoping for different results.
That would leave Edinson Cavani as an option from the bench late on.
