The biggest box office season, Sankranti, is just a couple of weeks away. Telugu films typically perform well during this period, even with average content. If a film boasts strong content, the potential is limitless.
This Sankranti, three films are set to clash. Ram Charan and Shankar’s pan-India film, Game Changer, will have its US premieres on January 9th, a Thursday—traditionally a popular day for US premieres. Balakrishna’s Daaku Maharaaj will premiere on January 11th, a Friday, while Venkatesh and Anil Ravipudi’s Sankranthiki Vasthunnam will have its premieres on January 13th, a Monday—a rare day for Telugu films in the US.

Let’s take a look at the breakeven targets for these films.
Game Changer has high stakes in North America, with a breakeven target estimated between 4 to 4.5 million. Following the massive success of Ram Charan’s RRR, expectations are high. However, pre-sales have been underwhelming so far, hitting around 300k. The film needs a significant boost to achieve a respectable US premiere figure. Shankar’s direction and Ram Charan’s star power offer potential, but pre-sales trends are crucial for buyers. Higher pre-sales are a must to ensure better and safer results for buyers.

For Balakrishna’s Daaku Maharaaj, the breakeven is set at around 1.5 million. While slightly higher, this target is reasonable given Balakrishna’s track record of delivering million-dollar films in the US. Positive word-of-mouth is key here.
Sankranthiki Vasthunnam has a lower breakeven target of 1.2 million, which seems easily achievable. The Venkatesh-Anil Ravipudi combo has a strong track record with films like F2 and F3, which performed well in this market. Positive reception and improved US market conditions could push this film even further.

With the current pre-sales trends being slow, content remains the key factor for success.
