G20 Summit 2023 in Delhi Live Updates (September 9): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe mega economic corridor. “Today we all have reached an important and historic partnership. In the coming times, it will be a major medium of economic integration between India, West Asia and Europe,” he said. The initiative involves India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, France, Italy, Germany and the US. Meanwhile, the G20 has adopted a consensus declaration on issues facing the bloc, PM Modi announced on Saturday during the summit. “On the back of the hard work of all the teams, we have received consensus on the G20 Leaders Summit Declaration. I announce the adoption of this declaration,” PM Modi told the G20 leaders in New Delhi
What has been happening today? Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the two-day Summit by calling on members to end a “global trust deficit” and announced that the bloc was granting permanent membership to the African Union in an effort to make it more representative. “Today, as the president of G20, India calls upon the entire world to first convert this global trust deficit into one trust and one confidence,” he said. “It is time for all of us to move together.”
What are some of the issues being discussed? The Summit began today, amid divisions in the grouping over the Russia-Ukraine war and China’s ambitions in the Indo-Pacific and the South China Sea. During the Summit in Indonesia in 2022, the group was deeply divided over the war in Ukraine as the declaration then had noted that while most nations condemned Russia for the invasion, there were also divergent views.
