G20 Summit LIVE: The African Union (AU), which represents 55 member states, on Saturday joined the G20 as a permanent member, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who kicked off the two-day G20 leaders’ Summit here, describing India’s G20 presidency as a symbol of inclusiveness.

At the opening session of the summit, AU Chair Azali Assoumani marked the Union’s entry as a permanent member of G20, on Modi’s invitation.

In his opening remark, Modi called for a collective approach to resolving the challenges facing the world today and emphasised on the need to restore mutual faith that has been lost due to war. G20 Summit LIVE: Ahead of the summit, officials of the G20 countries were engaged in intense deliberations over finding a consensus on the New Delhi declaration. The most contentious part of the final declaration was the position on Russia-Ukraine war. 

As China and Russia are also members of G20, they were against any hard positions on the Russia-Ukraine war. Earlier, any position from Russia-Ukraine was omitted from the draft New Delhi declaration and later wordings of the position were changed with which all members were comfortable.

As the African Union became a permanent member of the G20, President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosaon Saturday said the “global reconstruction” post the Covid 19 pandemic has brought a unique opportunity to accelerate transition to low carbon, climate resilient, sustainable societies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed grief at the loss of lives in an earthquake in Morocco and said India is ready to offer all possible assistance to it in this difficult time.

A powerful earthquake that struck Morocco late Friday killed more than 600 people.

Modi began his opening remarks at the G20 summit by offering condolences to those affected by the tragedy. “In this difficult hour the entire world community is with Morocco and we are ready to offer them all possible assistance,” he said. (PTI)

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the G20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi on reviving the Black Sea grain deal, two sources with knowledge of the matter said on Saturday.

As reported by Reuters, Russia quit the deal in July – a year after it was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey – complaining that its own food and fertiliser exports faced obstacles and that not enough Ukrainian grain was going to countries in need. (Reuters)

As India hosts the G20 Summit, security has been beefed up in the national capital.

Speaking about the security arrangements, Delhi Police Special Commissioner, Law and Order, Dependra Pathak, said that the situation is under control.

“There is a strategic and sufficient deployment (of police). The situation is peaceful and under control. We will continue to maintain this,” he said while addressing the media.

Earlier, while speaking to ANI Special CP, Law & Order, Dependra Pathak, said the Delhi Police is alert and all its personnel are on the ground. (ANI)

Tibetan activists staged a protest here in McLeodganj on Saturday appealing to the G20 leaders gathered in Delhi to discuss China’s alleged attempts at erasing Tibetan culture.

The student protesters alleged that the Chinese government was continuously assaulting their education system and trying to erase Tibetan culture and identity.

The protesters urged the world leaders to take a firm action against these actions. (PTI)

A shipping and rail transportation corridor linking countries across the Middle East, South Asia and Europe is likely to be announced on the sidelines of the ongoing G20 Summit in New Delhi, a White House official has said.

The United States, India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the European Union and other G20 partners are set to explore the shipping and rail transportation corridor, which is aimed at aiding in the flow of commerce, energy and data from India across the Middle East up to Europe. (ANI)

Hours after the African Union joined the G20 on Saturday, a senior delegate from South Africa said the voice of the continent and the Global South will “grow stronger” globally after the AU’s inclusion.

Speaking to PTI, the delegate who is in New Delhi currently for the G20 Summit, said that South Africa always expected that AU’s inclusion will happen.

“We are very happy, especially considering that South Africa has always supported the inclusion of AU in the G20, which would give our continent a voice on a bigger platform globally, not only for the African continent but the Global South [as well],” she told PTI, on the condition of anonymity. French President Emmanuel Macron touched down in India’s capital Saturday for the G20 summit, his office said.

Macron is due to have bilateral meetings over the two-day summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva among others, according to his office.  (AFP)

The European Commission president asked G20 leaders on Saturday to join a proposal to set up global carbon pricing.

Many countries are using a price on carbon to help meet their climate goals in the form of a tax or under an emissions trading (ETS), or cap-and-trade, system.

“Climate change is man-made. So it means we can address it. For this we need innovation, investments in green technologies, renewable energy capacity and energy efficiency … At the G20 I invited leaders to join the call for global carbon pricing,” Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X social media, (formerly Twitter). As India is holding the historic G20 Summit in Delhi, Congress leader Manish Tiwari on Saturday launched an attack on the Bharatiya Janta Party-led Centre, asking the government to clarify in Parliament whether the government is aiming to provide a military base to United States soldiers on Indian soil.

Tiwari, citing the India-US joint statement released by the White House on Friday, said, “Is this a precursor to providing US military bases on Indian soil? The NDA/BJP will have to clarify in Parliament.” (ANI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s placard at the opening of the G20 summit on Saturday referred to India as “Bharat”, raising speculation of a change of name for the South Asian nation.

India is also called Bharat, Bharata, Hindustan – its pre-colonial names – in Indian languages and these are used interchangeably by the public and officially.

While the country has traditionally stuck to using India in titles such as president or prime minister while communicating in English, President Droupadi Murmu earlier this week referred to herself as the “President of Bharat” in a dinner invitation for a reception of G20 leaders, sparking controversy. In a significant milestone under India’s G20 presidency, the African Union on Saturday became a new permanent member of the grouping of the largest economies of the world. It is the first expansion of the influential bloc since its inception in 1999.

Pottery has been used and created in India since the time of Mohan Jodaro. In terracotta, cooking utensils that we use on a daily basis, as well as other products such as lamps are manufactured by us from ancient times to the present. Major G20 partners will unveil ambitious plans Saturday to bolster trade between India, the Middle East and Europe, a modern-day Spice Route to bind regions that account for about a third of the global economy.

As reported by AFP, Washington, Saudi Arabia, the EU, the United Arab Emirates and others will sign an agreement on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi, presenting an alternative to China’s wide-ranging strategic infrastructure investments.

As the African Union joined the G20 on Saturday, Sunil Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises said the day will be remembered as a “defining milestone” towards charting more inclusive compositions across international organisations and their bodies.

Mittal congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi “for successfully leading the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20”.

“My hearty congratulations to PM Narendra Modi for successfully leading the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20. As this announcement finds its way from New Delhi to the world, I am certain that this day will be remembered as a defining milestone towards charting more inclusive compositions across international organisations and their bodies,” Mittal said in a statement. Amid deep divisions over the Ukraine war, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged world leaders to turn the global trust deficit into confidence in each other and find new solutions to age-old challenges.

In his opening remarks at the G20 Leaders’ Summit, Modi exuded confidence and said if the world could defeat Covid, it could also triumph over the trust deficit caused by the war.

“It is time for all of us to walk together for global good,” Modi said while addressing the ‘One Earth’ session of the G20 Leaders Summit attended by US President Joe Biden, Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva among others. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar left for New Delhi on Saturday morning to attend the dinner being hosted by President Droupadi Murmu on the occasion of G20 summit.

Kumar, accompanied by Water Resources Minister Sanjay Kumar Jha, left for Delhi in a flight around 11.10 am.

“The CM will attend the gala dinner hosted by the president in Delhi on Saturday evening,” said a senior official of the Chief Minister Office (CMO).
