At a time when international platforms are struggling to compete with each other, major players like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and SonyLIV are investing billions of dollars in OTT content to gain an edge in the Indian market. Amid this fierce competition, a new free OTT platform has been launched in India.
Yes, it’s true! The Indian government’s Prasar Bharati has introduced an absolutely free OTT platform called Waves.

Prasar Bharati, which already owns the once-iconic but now largely faded Doordarshan News (DD News), has launched Waves to bring its content into the digital era. Building on the legacy of Akashvani and Doordarshan, this step into OTT surprised everyone, especially since it is completely free.
The platform currently offers streaming in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada, and more. The Waves app is already live on Android and iOS, though the quality of the app and its streaming services remain to be seen as it has just launched.

Despite being a government initiative and free to use, there has been little publicity about Waves. Apart from a simple update on the Press Information Bureau (PIB) website, the launch hasn’t generated much buzz.
It remains to be seen how Waves will perform in a competitive market, whether its content library can attract viewers, and if it will manage to survive in the long run.
