Changing your name after marriage is a common practice for women in India, but imagine having to change your name just to fit in. That’s the reality an Indian immigrant faced due to discrimination and political struggles.
An NRI shared their ordeal on social media, planning a full name change because of strict government regulations in their country. They wrote, “I am facing issues in current country due to my full name in the Last name option. That’s according to the government regulation for immigrants.”

It is disheartening to see that racism is not limited to the societal level but it is becoming such a big issue in official procedures that people are forced to change their full names. The name change might solve one problem, but it creates another.
Updating documents across two countries is a nightmare. The NRI in question now faces a long and frustrating process to align their identity in India as well.

While they disclosed that after their marriage they are no longer an Indian citizen, they would still like to apply for OCI. This will throw them into the red tape chaos across borders which they are willing to do just to have peace for the rest of their lives.
Their story isn’t unique, it’s happening to countless others forced to erase parts of themselves just to survive. But in today’s world, where racism and bureaucracy go hand in hand, that’s the sad reality.
