The Federation of Farmers Association and State Sugarcane Cultivators Association will hold a candlelight protest on December 31, supporting their various demands including a legal guarantee for a minimum support price.

The candlelight protest is also to express solidarity with the farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal who is on a hunger strike in Delhi since the last 34 days seeking the implementation of the demands.

Sharing the details of the planned protest, Kurubur Shanthakumar of the Association said here on Monday that farmers were seeking what is legitimately due to them and were not asking for alms. But the Centre was indifferent to the genuine demands of the farmers, he added.

Lashing out at the Modi government, Mr. Shanthakumar said the government’s priorities seemed to be different and was pursuing issues such as one-nation one-election which was not sought by the public. But if farmers who constitute 80 per cent of the country’s population place a demand, the government turns a blind eye to it, said Mr. Shanthakumar.

Though Mr. Dallewal has been on hunger strike for 34 days, it has not drawn the attention of the government, and the MPs too are content maintaining a silence, said Mr. Shanthakumar who cautioned that they would be boycotted in their respective constituencies. A delegation of farmers from Karnataka will also leave for Delhi in due course to take part in the protest at the national capital, he added. District organising secretary of the association Attahalli Devaraj, district vice president M. Neelakantappa and others were present.
