New Delhi: Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is circulating globally, including in India, the Health Ministry said on Monday. None of the reported cases in India have any travel history, and all the infected individuals are recovering well.

India recorded two new HMPV cases on Tuesday, bringing the total to seven. Although the virus is not new, growing awareness of its potential health implications has sparked discussions among healthcare experts and the public alike.

HMPV is a common respiratory virus that typically causes mild symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and nasal congestion. While most cases resolve with rest and adequate hydration, vulnerable groups—including infants, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems—may experience more severe complications, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

Dr. Rajesh Chawla, Senior Consultant in Respiratory and Critical Care, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, reassured the public, downplaying fears of an outbreak. “Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases appear sporadically every year, so there is no need to panic,” he said. “HMPV is a very mild virus, and very few cases of serious illness, like severe pneumonia, occur. Practicing good hygiene, wearing masks in crowded spaces, and maintaining physical distance remain effective ways to reduce the risk of transmission. Hospitals are well-prepared, having managed very serious cases during the COVID-19 pandemic. The only thing hospitals need to ensure is that their inventory and resources are in order.”Dr. R.R. Dutta, HOD, Internal Medicine, Paras Health, echoed these sentiments, stating that the current situation is well within seasonal expectations. “There has been no significant increase in respiratory illness cases beyond the expected seasonal variations. Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) usually causes mild symptoms like cough, fever, and nasal congestion, similar to the common cold. In certain vulnerable groups, it may lead to flu-like symptoms or complications, but there is no cause for concern at this time, as the situation remains under control.”

Sharing practical advice on managing the virus, Dr. Dutta, said, “The best way to prevent HMPV, like any respiratory virus, is through simple hygiene practices—washing hands frequently, avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands, and staying home if unwell. For those with symptoms, measures like covering your mouth and nose when sneezing, avoiding close contact with others, and not sharing utensils can help prevent transmission. With appropriate precautions, we can effectively manage and mitigate its spread.”

Dr. Shelly Mahajan, Lab Director and Clinical Lead at Mahajan Imaging Labs, stressed the importance of vigilance and early detection. “Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is an emerging health concern, and understanding its symptoms, precautions, and testing protocols is essential to stem its spread effectively. Early detection is key, so anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.”

She also emphasised preventive strategies. “Precautionary measures are critical in combating the spread of the virus. Strengthening your immunity through a healthy diet, adequate rest, and regular physical activity is also important. For accurate diagnosis, specific laboratory tests, including RT-PCR, antibody testing, and comprehensive blood panels, are essential. In some cases, imaging such as chest X-rays or CT scans may be recommended to evaluate respiratory involvement. By working together and taking proactive measures, we can minimize the impact of the virus and safeguard public health.”

As India monitors new HMPV cases, public health experts urge citizens to stay informed and practice preventive measures. While the virus may pose a risk to vulnerable groups, timely intervention and widespread awareness can help mitigate its impact.
