Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Aiden Markram has admitted that he does not know what is going on behind the scenes about Umran Malik, but he still remains their “X factor.” The former Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody tried to explain how a certain player gets into the team ahead of somebody else and how the decision-making process works in a franchise.

“Not sure to be honest. Certainly, he is a player with the X factor, bowls at 150 kph but I don’t really know what’s about behind the scenes but he has a lot of X factor,” the SRH captain said at the toss against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Talking about the incident, Moody said that going by his statement it seems as if he has little say in selection, adding that it indicates Umran should have played but has been unfairly left out of the side.
“It implies that he has very little say on selection. He might have an opinion on Umran Malik and what he probably feels his season should have been like with regards to opportunities to play. I think Markram is indicating that he should be playing, and he is probably unfairly left out a number of games ago now. And that’s not ideal. You need your captain and coach on the same page,” Moody told espncricinfo.
The 57-year-old, who has been a part of the decision-making process for a couple of franchises tried to explain how it works and how a certain player gets into the team ahead of somebody else.
“In some franchises, it’s a very simple process, where the captain and the coach, and maybe someone in cricket operations or even another senior player will come up with what they feel is the best team. And there’s other teams, where there’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen. I think that applies in this situation we are talking about the Sunrisers. There’s clearly a lot of cooks in the kitchen, and we don’t know who the leader is… Who’s got the tallest chef’s hat!” Moody revealed.
Former India pacer Zaheer Khan also said that Malik was not handled well by Sunrisers Hyderabad and went on to explain the reason behind SRH having a forgettable season this year in the Indian Premier League.
“I think Umran Malik has not been handled well by the franchise with the way his services should have been utilised by SRH and that has been evident (in this season),” Zaheer stated in a select virtual media interaction.
“When you are talking about a young seamer, you are also looking at creating that environment and support (for him). That (kind of) guidance is required. Unfortunately, that was not seen from SRH and that is why he has had the season the way he had this year,” said the 44-year-old, who is also an IPL expert for JioCinema.
