ESPN hires Cam Newton to join Stephen A. Smith on First Take

Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton is set to join ESPN’s First Take, it has been revealed.

The Hollywood Reporter claims Newton, who spent the majority of his 11-year career with the Carolina Panthers, will make his debut at Tennessee State’s football game this Friday as part of First Take’s HBCU roadshow.

The morning sports talk show, which is hosted by Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim, is one of the most popular programs on the network and also includes the likes of Shannon Sharpe and Chris ‘Mad Dog’ Russo.

‘I’ve always brought passion and energy into everything I do, and that won’t change at ESPN,’ Newton is quoted as saying. ‘I’m looking forward to the opportunity to share my perspective and go toe-to-toe with the best in the business.

‘Fans can expect the same intensity I brought to the field, along with real talk, bold takes, and good fun.’

Newton initially spent nine seasons with the Panthers after being selected with the first overall pick at the 2011 NFL Draft.

The Atlanta-born quarterback was named NFL MVP in 2015, the same season he helped Carolina reach its second Super Bowl, which ended in defeat against the Denver Broncos.

He went on to spend brief time with the New England Patriots and another season with the Panthers, but has not played since failing to be re-signed by the team in 2021.

‘Cam Newton’s addition to First Take brings an electrifying presence, enhancing our roster of top-tier personalities,’ said ESPN exec David Roberts.

‘His dynamic charisma, combined with the high-profile debates alongside Stephen A. Smith, will create compelling, must-watch television for fans.’

Newton’s arrival at ESPN continues the network’s talent shake-up, with several high-profile personalities let go and other star names added to the roster.

Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce has been added to this season’s Monday Night Football lineup, while ex-Alabama coach Nick Saban has been brought in as an analyst on ‘College GameDay’.
