InsideSport reached out to the decision-makers in the BCCI for clarity on Dravid’s comments. A BCCI official who attended such meetings told InsideSport that senior multi-format players have already been informed about the succession plan. While the focus will be on ODI World Cup, the team management will keep preparing separately for T20 World Cup 2024.
“Every team has a short-term and long-term plan. ODI World Cup is our short-term plan. T20 WC is of course the long-term plan. The cycle has already begun. But we won’t get as many T20s this year to keep preparing for the WC. Instead, we have to look for opportunities where we can to prepare the team. If you look at the current squad, it’s the right mix. We only need experience in bowling. In two years, they will get there,” the official said.
India T20 Reboot: End of Road for Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma in T20s? BCCI official confirms, Rahul Dravid’s plans of ‘Fresh, young blood in T20 team for T20 WC’
What is BCCI’s plan for India T20 Reboot?
- Have a young team looking at a two-year span.
- Rebuilding starts now under Hardik Pandya’s leadership.
- The BCCI wants to have a core group of players for T20s like India have had for ODIs and Tests.
- The squad for SriLanka T20 series has an average of 27.
- The most experienced player in the squad is Hardik Pandya who has played 83 T20s.
Rahul Dravid hinted at using a new template with young players at the helm. At the post-match press conference after 2nd T20, Dravid said that the team is slightly in a different stage of looking at T20s and younger players will get more chances.
What did Rahul Dravid say?
“For us from the last semifinal that we played against England, only 3-4 boys are playing in the XI against SriLanka. We are slightly in a different stage of looking at the next cycle of T20. So ours is a slightly younger team and for us to play against the quality of Sri Lanka is a fantastic experience. The good thing is that a lot of focus is on the ODI World Cup and World Test Championship. So the T20s give us the opportunity to try out these guys,” Dravid said.
Earlier, InsideSport reported that, many seniors including Rohit & Virat won’t be picked for T20 series against NewZealand. Other than the duo, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar also won’t be considered for the Indian T20 team anymore. To put it bluntly, they don’t fit into India’s T20 plannings anymore. If picked, they are certain to play. Hence, to make way for juniors, they will not be considered for T20s.
“Unfortunately, they won’t be picked or considered for NewZealand series. It’s not about them being dropped or anything, we feel we need to move and prepare the team for the future. Finally, it is selectors who will pronounce the decision,” a top BCCI official confirmed to InsideSport.
