Empuraan’s Disturbing Scenes to Be Cut

The producer of L2: Empuraan, Gokulam Gopalan, has asked director Prithviraj to make changes to the film after complaints that certain scenes offended some groups.

The controversy surrounding L2: Empuraan has intensified due to the depiction of disturbing communal violence, particularly scenes involving a Muslim village being burned down by Hindus, a Muslim child brutally killed, and a pregnant Muslim woman raped by a Hindu man.

Speaking to the media, Gopalan mentioned that some words had already been muted, and if necessary, further modifications would be made and scenes will be cut.

He clarified that the film was cleared by the censor board without any issues, and that his production house has no political affiliations.

The controversy stems from the film’s depiction of the Gujarat riots and its criticism of the ruling party’s alleged misuse of central agencies.

While some political groups, like Kerala Congress, praised the film, claiming it exposes divisive agendas, BJP leaders in Kerala took a neutral stance, stating that viewers can decide for themselves whether to support or criticize it.

Documents from the CBFC censorship process reveal that only two cuts were suggested—reducing violence against women and avoiding certain references to the national flag.

However, some BJP supporters believe the censor board overlooked problematic content. Despite social media backlash, BJP leaders clarified that they do not officially oppose the film.

Meanwhile, Gopalan admitted that modifying the film in all 4,000 theatres would cost at least 40 lakhs. He assured that the intention was never to hurt anyone but to entertain audiences.
