Emergency

It is impossible to release a film on the big screen without being approved by the censor board. This is a phase that has led to certain controversies over the years, including the removal of Pahlaj Nihalani as the chairman of CBFC in 2017.

Nihalani’s removal after a series of changes made by him led to heavy criticism from the public. This included his objection to a kissing scene in Spectre alongside the demand for 89 cuts in Udta Punjab, which was eventually cleared with an A certificate with one modification.

Although Prasoon Joshi took over the same position, similar issues continue to exist. The latest was the censorship of OMG 2 and The Kerala Story last year. Meanwhile, another film is yet to cross this obstacle and unfortunately, only one week is left for release.

Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency is all set to arrive in theatres next Friday. However, the actress recently revealed that the CBFC is yet to clear everything with a certificate. Notably, the political drama has already found itself in trouble for the content, including that Shiromani Akali Dal is calling for a ban on charges of misrepresentation of the Sikhs.

Satya Pal Jain, the Additional Solicitor General of India, gave an update on the matter by saying that the censorship would be completed based on the rules and regulations of the board. He also stated that people can speak to the board in case of any grievance.

Another source claimed that the CBFC has reportedly suggested a few changes with the inclusion of voiceovers as disclaimers alongside other modifications in dialogues. The board is additionally seeking factual information to prove certain things claimed in the film, including the sequences of the Bangladesh war and comments of US President Richard Nixon and Winston Churchill about Indians.

Although the makers have already provided the details to the CBFC, the certificate has not been issued and it remains to be seen if Emergency will arrive on the big screen as scheduled on September 6, 2024.
