Between 2018 and 2022, almost half of the immigrants who arrived in the US had a college degree. This means that immigrants, as a group, are generally more educated than the average American.

India stands out as a leader among countries contributing educated immigrants, with about 2 million degree holders living in the US. This accounts for 14% of the total educated immigrant population.
Following India, China contributes around 1.1 million educated immigrants. Other countries like the Philippines and Mexico also contribute significant numbers, but India remains the largest source.

Educated immigrants enter the US through various paths. Some arrive on temporary work visas for skilled jobs, while others come as family members of US residents or through humanitarian programs.
Many Indian immigrants also pursue further education after arriving in the US.

Many college-educated immigrants work in skilled jobs, with the largest sectors being management, computer science, healthcare, and finance.
For instance, immigrants make up a significant portion of computer hardware engineers and physicians in the US.
However, despite their qualifications, many highly educated immigrants are not employed in jobs that match their skills.
While the number of educated immigrants has grown rapidly, many still face challenges in finding suitable jobs.
About 20% of these immigrants are either unemployed or working in low-skilled positions, a situation known as “brain waste.”
A major issue is the difficulty in getting foreign qualifications recognized in the US, which prevents many skilled individuals from securing jobs that match their expertise.
Addressing these challenges is important for making the most of the talents of educated immigrants in the US.
