The dream of securing an EB-2 visa in 2024 has just hit a roadblock, creating anxiety and panic among the thousands of highly skilled professionals. The U.S. Department, in collaboration with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), has announced that all available visas in the EB-2 category for this fiscal year have been issued.

People who have spent months, even years, preparing their cases feel like the door is closing – at least till the next Fiscal Year (FY).

These visas are not just paperwork, but also represent hope for countless individuals who have spent a good time and energy building careers, invested in education and brought their expertise to tirelessly contribute to the U.S. economy. From advanced degree owners to tech innovators and medical professionals are now left wondering what the future holds for them.

“I’ve waited months for my application to move forward,” says one applicant. “Knowing that they’ve run out of visas for this year makes the wait even harder.”

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) sets strict limits to the number of employment based visas issued annually. The EB-2 category receives 28.6% of the total employment based visa allocation. And with the visa cap now reached, causing panic among the immigrants. Embassies and consulates have done their part to maximize this year’s visa, and will not issue any more EB-2 visas until the new fiscal year, beginning October 1, 2024.

For those still in the queue, the next few months will be filled with uncertainty. A long wait for those who have already been waiting, hoping their turn will come soon. The wait, however, is never easy.
