Double standards of Elon Musk? Netizens recall ‘Haitian immigrant slurs’ amid immigration reform push

Amid a heated controversy surrounding US H-1B visa policies and immigration reform, billionaire businessman Elon Musk has once again found himself at the center of an online firestorm. Musk’s recent call for increased immigration to combat a talent shortage in tech has reignited debates about his stance on immigration issues, with critics accusing him of hypocrisy.
On X (formerly Twitter), Musk today wrote: “Anyone – of any race, creed, or nationality – who came to America and worked like hell to contribute to this country will forever have my respect. America is the land of freedom and opportunity. Fight with every fiber of your being to keep it that way!”

While Musk’s words seemed inclusive, netizens quickly pointed out a glaring contradiction. Earlier this year, Musk faced backlash for amplifying alleged racist narratives about Haitian immigrants in Ohio, tied to former President Donald Trump’s controversial campaign rhetoric.
The apparent contradiction between Musk’s call for increased immigration and his involvement in past anti-immigrant narratives hasn’t gone unnoticed. One X user wrote: “Wild to see this after Musk was promoting racist stuff about Haitians in Springfield.”

Springfield incident and viral memes
During Trump’s campaign, rumors spread online claiming that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were harming and eating pets. Musk, at the time, shared memes supporting the narrative, including an AI-generated image of Trump hugging a duck and kitten, captioned: “Protect our ducks and kittens in Ohio!”
The rumor, originating from a Facebook post, alleged that a missing cat was found being prepped for food by a Haitian neighbor. The claims were later amplified by Republican leaders like Senator JD Vance and Senator Ted Cruz, fueling anti-immigration sentiments. Critics pointed out Musk’s role in pushing these narratives, which many labeled as xenophobic.
H-1B reforms and Republican rift
Musk’s current advocacy for legal immigration has placed him at odds with several Republican leaders. His recent comments about the need for highly skilled foreign workers reflect Silicon Valley’s growing demand for talent.
“The number of super talented engineers in the USA is far too low. Think of this like a pro sports team—you recruit top talent wherever they are to win,” Musk argued, adding that the current H-1B lottery system should be replaced with a merit-based approach.
Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy, who has aligned with Musk on this issue, echoed these sentiments, pushing for H-1B reforms that prioritize skilled workers. However, the discussion has also reignited criticism of Musk’s past statements and actions regarding immigrants.
