The US Presidential election of 2024 seems to be experiencing an unexpected yet familiar crossover with Indian politics. During a speech in Michigan, Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump said that he would cut the prices of electricity and energy in half, thus reducing inflation and setting up industries in the state.
This statement sparked interest among the Indian public as it seems eerily similar to Aam Aadmi Party’s campaign slogan for the 2020 elections—”Bijli Half, Paani Maaf.”

This has led to AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal taking a jibe at the BJP-led government’s criticism of subsidy politics by saying, “Trump has announced that he will reduce electricity rates by half. Free ki revri reach US…”
The ‘revri’ remark originates from Prime Minister Modi’s repeated criticism of AAP’s freebie policies, referring to highly subsidised electricity as ‘muft ki revri’. This jibe by Arvind Kejriwal is aimed at the BJP, as Donald Trump is often considered to be a close ally and friend of PM Modi.

Donald Trump’s statement has led people to express their opinions online, with one user jokingly saying, “Did Trump just copy Kejriwal’s ‘Bijli Half’ slogan? Freebies going global!”, while many others termed it as another election gimmick in Trump’s bag.
While it’s hard to determine whether Donald Trump’s statements had the intended effect on the American public, there is no doubt that they did create a new ripple in the politics of India, a country thousands of miles apart from the US!
