Did you know that Govinda got scared when he first heard the script of ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’? – Times of India

Anil Sharma’s iconic film, ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ recently completed 20 glorious years on June 15 this year. While the film originally starred Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the lead roles, reports were rife that it was Govinda and Kajol who was first approached for the movie.

Spilling the beans on the same, director Anil told a news portal that he never cast Govinda for the role. It was when he was directing Govinda’s ‘Maharaja’ that he narrated the story to him. According to the filmmaker, the ‘Hero No 1’ actor got scared after listening to the story. He was wondering how someone would pull off a film of this kind and scale. This was the time when nobody was recreating Pakistan. So according to the director, Sunny was always the first choice for the movie.

Elaborating further, he added that for the role of the female lead, he had approached many actresses of the time. However, nothing worked out and eventually Ameesha Patel was cast for the role of Sakina.

Meanwhile, on the work front, he announced ‘Apne 2’ with the Deols. Apart from Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby Deol, the much-awaited sequel will also star Karan Deol in the lead role.

Earlier, talking about his bond with the Deol family, Anil Sharma had told ETimes, “When you work with someone extensively throughout your career, you obviously form a bond with them. And the Deols are such good people that you just become one with them. Dharam ji has been in this industry for the past 60 years but he is still a simpleton and doesn’t consider himself a superstar. He hails from a small town called Sahnewal in Punjab. Dharam ji calls himself Sahnewal’s farmer. He was a huge fan of Dilip Kumar and used to dream about coming to Mumbai and becoming an actor. He is still the same.”

Elaborating further, he added, “Even after having such an illustrious career, he is still as excited for a film as a debutant. Even today, he calls the camera the love of his love. He once told me that ‘To be a good actor, you need to be a good person first’ and you see Dharam ji being exactly like that. Karan Deol has also been brought up with good values. Despite being a part of such a big family, he is simple and grounded. I absolutely adore them all.”
