Lucknow: Nearly 80% of people do not brush their teeth properly, increasing the risk of oral diseases. This was highlighted by experts during an awareness programme organised by the Public Health Dentistry department at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), held the day after National Tooth Brushing Day.
The event was led by the head of the department, Dr Vinay Kumar Gupta, along with Dr Gaurav Mishra. Dr Gupta explained that studies show most people make common brushing mistakes, such as brushing too hard, using the wrong toothbrush, or not brushing for the recommended two minutes.
Brushing too hard can damage tooth enamel and gums, while using a hard-bristled brush can irritate the gums. Many people also skip brushing all surfaces of their teeth or neglect to clean their tongues, leading to plaque buildup and gum disease. Brushing immediately after eating acidic foods is another mistake, as it can weaken enamel.
Dr Gaurav Mishra added that other common mistakes include not replacing the toothbrush regularly, not using fluoride toothpaste, and skipping flossing. He emphasised the importance of using mouthwash along with brushing for better protection.
The previous day included discussions and demonstrations on proper brushing techniques in KGMU’s medical and dental outpatient departments to educate patients. A quiz on oral health was also held for interns to help them stay updated on the latest oral health practices.
On Thursday, special camps were organised in Sarojininagar and Banthra Satellite Clinic by Dr Sumit Kumar Pal, Dr Nishita Kankane, and other department residents.
These camps focused on teaching children and rural residents about dental hygiene and proper brushing techniques. KGMU’s Radio Goonj also aired a live discussion where experts shared simple tips on tooth and gum care.
The department plans to continue its efforts with the “Anant Muskan” project, which aims to train over 40,000 students in 385 schools across Lucknow to improve oral health in the community, said Dr. Vinay Kumar Gupta.
