Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone recently reacted strongly to a statement by L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan, who suggested employees should work on Sundays. During an event, he remarked, “What do you do sitting at home? How long can you look at your wife? Come on, get to the office and start working.”
The comments caused widespread outrage, with many calling them insensitive and sexist. Journalist Faye D’Souza shared the statement on social media, and Deepika reposted it with her reaction. She also added the hashtag #MentalHealthMatters, highlighting the importance of mental well-being.

L&T later issued a clarification, explaining that the chairman’s remarks reflected a vision of extraordinary effort needed for nation-building. Their statement read, “The Chairman’s remarks reflect a larger ambition… Extraordinary outcomes require extraordinary effort.” Stating that the chairman meant to inspire the working youth to push forward towards the goal of transforming India into a Developed country.
However, Deepika wasn’t convinced and responded to the clarification, saying, “And they just made it worse…”

This controversy has sparked an online debate about toxic workplace culture, with many supporting Deepika’s stand. Critics argued that such statements dismiss the importance of work-life balance and mental health while also reflecting casual sexism.
