Himachal Rains Live Updates (August 14): At least 29 people have been killed in Himachal Pradesh since Sunday night in separate incidents as rains wreaked havoc in the state, officials informed today. While 9 people were buried under the rubble of a temple that collapsed in the Summer Hill area of Shimla, 7 people were killed after a cloudburst occurred early today in the Jadon village in Solan district. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited the temple collapse site in the Summer Hill area and the other disaster site in Shimla’s Fagli area, where several houses were buried under mud and slush.
Meanwhile, a red alert has been sounded by the weather department in Uttarakhand while the police and SDRF team are on alert, as told by Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar to news agency ANI. A college building in Dehradun collapsed Monday morning amidst a flood-like situation following incessant rainfall in the region. Further, Rudraprayag-Gaurikund National Highway near Bansbara village in the Chamoli district has been closed due to road erosion by the strong currents of the Mandakini river following persistent rains.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts very heavy rainfall activity over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand today (August 14). Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh are also likely to experience fairly widespread rains. Light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Uttarakhand between Monday and Friday (August 18), according to the IMD’s daily bulletin.
