  • Aussie cricket great declared interest in politics
  • Bemused many of his 2.7 million followers on X

Cricket star David Warner has stunned many of his social media followers after revealing an interest in politics – before outlining how he wants to make Australia better in his eyes.

Following Warner’s shock declaration on Monday, many supporters on X asked the same question: is the batsman eyeing off a potential bold new career in Canberra, or is he looking at making the career switch in India, where the 38-year-old has long been a revered figure.

‘I think I need to join and become a member of parliament!! Thoughts???,’ was Warner’s first tweet.

Less than an hour later Warner responded to a reply from his original post on X – and it’s safe to say it raised a few eyebrows with his 2.7 million followers.

Warner posted he ‘loved the insight’ when it was recommended he become an Independent candidate, before stating his focus would be ‘lowering income tax and raising GST’ if he campaigned for a seat in parliament.

He then added it was vital to ‘protect home first’ and ‘back Australian products.’

‘What? Why? How?,’ was one fan’s response to Warner’s potential career shift.

‘Don’t become a politician, become a leader,’ urged another.

‘Raise the GST? You realise this is a tax that hinders the less well off, in a cost of living crisis….that is honestly a terrible idea,’ pointed out a third.

‘Now David, I know you didn’t excel at school….but were good with a cricket bat.

‘Ethics [were] not a strong point either,’ said a fourth, referencing the ‘Sandpapergate’ scandal of 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa.

‘Taxes pay for education, hospitals, defence forces, social services for the elderly, sick and generally not as fortunate. We [Australia] are a great country because of that.’

It comes as Warner recently was snapped up by London Spirit ahead of The Hundred white-ball tournament in the United Kingdom later this year.

The squad will play their homes games at Lord’s, and will be coached by Justin Langer, who previously oversaw the Aussie national team before he was replaced by Andrew McDonald.

Warner’s contract with London Spirit is for $247,000 – with Steve Smith to turn out for Cardiff-based Welsh Fire.

Current Aussie ODI stars Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis were all overlooked by the competing franchises.
