Heavy rain lashed the eastern mandals of Chittoor district on Saturday (November 30). The mandals of Nindra, Nagari, Vijayapuram, Karveti Nagaram, and Sri Rangaraja Puram witnessed rain from Friday (November 29) midnight until early hours due to the impact of Cyclone Fengal in the Bay of Bengal. By 9.00 a.m., the region reported 132 mm rainfall.
There was slight to heavy drizzle in Chittoor and the western mandals, though the district is under an orange alert. The neighboring Annamayya district also witnessed heavy drizzle due to the cyclone’s impact.
Following the downpour, traffic on the busy Nagari-Chennai NH came to a grinding halt at the border between Ponpadi and Tiruttani.
The Kusasthali river in the heart of Nagari town started receiving some inflows in the morning. The revenue officials said that though the situation was not alarming, a vigil would be maintained in the low-lying areas and along the culverts and causeways, which had a previous history of inundation.
Meanwhile, the rains due to Cyclone Fengal came as a blessing to the mango farmers in the Chittoor and Annamayya districts. The soil moisture in the mango orchards is during the October-December months is essential for a healthy flowering in February.
