Create geospatial action plan: KSCST

The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) has called upon the State government to create a Geospatial Action Plan for better utilisation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographical Information System (GIS).

Participating in a State-level GIS workshop on Geospatial Applications for District Level Planning on Monday, U.T. Vijay, Executive Secretary, KSCST, called on the government to create a Geospatial Action Plan.

Praveen Ramamurthy, Secretary, KSCST, said that as everything is interdisciplinary, there should be better collaboration between departments for better implementation of government schemes. “Everything is interdisciplinary now, departments can no longer function individually. Collaboration is a must. GIS requires departments to collaborate with each other,” he said.

In her inaugural address Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, said that GIS is one of the best technologies to have been developed, however maximum use of it has not been made.

Mapping technology

Ms. Rajneesh further gave examples of how she employed the mapping technology for efficient water distribution and evaluating roadworks while she was Deputy Commissioner. She also called for people’s participation-based planning, a process in which locals actively participate in identifying problems and implementing solutions.
