Amid rising COVID-19 cases, the Leh district administration today said wearing masks in public places will be mandatory for people. The district recorded 11 COVID-19 cases last week.

“People must ensure compulsory wearing of facemasks in offices, workplaces and public places, including public transport,” District Disaster Management Authority CEO Santosh Sukhadeve said in an official order.

Ten states and Union territories have so far detected the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant of the virus.

These states are Kerala (83), Goa (51), Gujarat (34), Karnataka (eight), Maharashtra (seven), Rajasthan (five), Tamil Nadu (four), Telangana (two) Odisha (one) and Delhi (one), according to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).

A total of 196 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected in the country so far, with Odisha joining the list of states that have detected the presence of the variant, INSACOG’s data updated on Monday said 

Covid Cases India Live Updates: A microbiologist, coronavirus expert, and Covid Awareness Specialist, Rotary Club of Madras Next Gen, Dr Pavithra Venkatagopalan said, “JN.1 is a sub-variant of Omicron, which means it has evolved through some genetic changes from Omicron variant to form the current strain which has found a lot of success in its ability to infect and transmit between people. JN.1 has a much higher transmissibility rate as compared to Omicron which means the number of people it can reach is much higher than it was for Omicron. Possibly even a small amount of exposure can cause an infection.”

Available diagnostic kits are able to detect the current variant so it is always better to get tested when symptoms surface, as it is similar to flu,” reported The Hindu.

It is spreading silently as most cases are asymptomatic or even mild where an infected person may not even know. But, it has not shown any major illness in clinical context,” reported The Hindu.

As per a TOI report, before entering the animal enclosures zoo keepers are supposed to dip their feet in the chemical-mixed water. The vegetables and other food products that is served to animals is chemically cleaned.

The zoo director, D Mahesh Kumar said that the thermal scanning of the visitors was being done randomly by the health department staff, reported TOI. Thermal scanning of employees is being doe before allowing them to enter zoo premises.

Delhi Minister Saurab Bhardwaj on Sunday said that all the positive cases that are detected through RTPCR testing have been sent for genome sequencing as well. He also said that only six COVID-19-positive patients are admitted to hospitals in Delhi, and the majority of cases are mild.

“All the positive cases coming in RTPCR test, we are sending those samples for genome sequencing. Currently, there is not a single positive case of the new variant in Delhi,” said Minister Bhardwaj.

With the addition of five new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, Odisha reported a total of 19 new cases in December, reported PTI citing health officials on Sunday. 

The total active Covid-19 cases in the state now is 18 as one patient has recovered from the disease. Given the rising number of corona virus cases across the nation, Odisha government has directed all districts to increase surveillance on ILI (influenza-like illness), and SARI (severe acute respiratory infection) and ensure the availability of COVID-19 testing in every health institution.

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said that the capital recorded 10 new COVID cases in the last 24 hours with no instances of the new variant detected so far.

Minister Bhardwaj stated, “There is such a pattern that after the increase in Corona cases in South India, the cases also increase in North India.”

According to the latest health report, 599 tests were conducted in Delhi, with 10 samples testing positive, he said.

Minister Bhardwaj reassured the public by noting that currently, only six COVID-19-positive patients are admitted to hospitals in Delhi, and the majority of cases are mild.

After three long years of Covid-induced turbulence, 2023 saw a semblance of normalcy in the health sector, allowing the government to turn its attention to other important commitments such as the elimination of sickle cell disease and the launch of Ayushman Bhav to ensure optimum delivery of health schemes.

However, by the end of the year, the Covid scare resurfaced as the number of daily cases began to rise due to the emergence of new sub-variant JN.1 and cold weather conditions, prompting the health ministry to step up surveillance.

The year began with concerns over the XBB.1.16 variant of the coronavirus leading to some rise in cases, but it eventually petered out, allowing the health ministry officials to focus on other priority areas.

Covid Cases India Live Updates: Senior pulmonologist and former Safdarjung Hospital HOD, Dr Neeraj Gupta, said, “JN.1 is a variant of Omicron. It is a very mild virus. It crosses our immune barriers and is able to infect us with a normal infection. Like any viral infection, this is also mild; it is not of a very severe nature, and we are not expecting any admissions or higher admission rates.”

He also mentioned that patients with comorbidities or any severe condition that decreases the immune system must be more cautious as morbidity rate is high among them, that may eventually lead to mortality.

One must keep physical distance of at least 1 metre from others, even if they don’t appear to be sick and avoid crowded gatherings.

One should clean hands frequently with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

One should cover mouth and nose with a bent elbow or tissue while coughing or sneezing.

One must dispose off used tissues immediately and clean hands regularly.

In case one tends to develop symptoms or tests positive for Covid-19, the person must self-isolate until recovery and take appropriate medicines and rest.
