Portuguese New Year celebrations during the colonial era are believed to be the genesis of Cochin Carnival. The New Year’s Day mass procession, which is the carnival’s major attraction, is led by elephants decked out in decorative garb.
Numerous competitions are held, including kayaking, swimming, marathons, beach volleyball, beach football, boxing, wrestling, and cycling races. The carnival’s joyous atmosphere is enhanced with art exhibits, culinary festivals, vibrant rallies, and fairs.
