The old guard is not done yet. Even as the new season of the Ranji Trophy starts on Tuesday, the members of the outgoing selection committee will be very much in action. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given the Ranji assignment to the Chetan Sharma-led Committee.

According to sources in the BCCI and various state associations, chairman Chetan Sharma will be in Mohali for Punjab’s game against Chandigarh while Sunil Joshi will be in Pune for the Maharashtra versus Delhi game.

Harvinder Singh will be in Hyderabad for the home team’s clash against Tamil Nadu and Debasis Mohanty, the selector from East Zone, will be in Kolkata for the Bengal-Uttar Pradesh game. The roster was done, understandably, on the advice of the BCCI, which is yet to finalise the new selection committee.

As of Monday (December 12) evening, the interviews for the new selection committee have not been scheduled. The thinking is that a new selection committee could be formed before the second round of Ranji games which start on December 20.

The Apex Council of the BCCI is scheduled to meet on December 21 and there may be a chance that the council will approve the appointment of the new selection committee. It will be the first meeting of the Apex Council formed after the election to the BCCI in October.

Unadkat yet to join Indian team

Meanwhile the news from Bangladesh, where the Indian team is preparing for the first Test, is that Jaydev Unadkat is yet to join the squad. The left-arm pacer, a last minute inclusion for the two-Test series, is expected to reach Dhaka on Tuesday.

It is still not clear if he will be considered for the match straight away but the impression about the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram is that it looks flat as of now. There is a bit of grass on it and the team management is waiting to see how much grass will be left if it decides on the XI. The match starts on Wednesday (December 14).
