Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam’s EO, Shyamala Rao, spoke to the media amidst the whole Tirupati Laddu controversy that has been making headlines in the country over the last 24 hours.
Shyamala Rao mentioned that there have been recent complaints regarding the quality of the Laddu. He said, “I spoke to the potu workers as well. Even they expressed the same disappointment. They opined that high-quality ghee should be used to make a high-quality Laddu.”

He said that in their investigation, it was found that low-standard ghee was being used for the preparation. As TTD doesn’t have a testing laboratory, it had to depend on other laboratories for quality checks.
Shyamala Rao revealed that the ghee was being sold for a cheap price of Rs. 411 per kg, which no quality ghee producer would sell for. “To supply pure cow ghee, there will be a viable price. It was being sold for Rs. 320-Rs. 411 rupees per kg. Experts and others opined that it is impossible to sell pure ghee for such a low price,” he stated.

“AR Foods secured the tender of supplying ghee on March 12. They started supplying the ghee after May 15. When we took over, we sent back four tankers as the ghee quality was not good. On July 6 and July 12, we sent samples for lab testing where it was found out that adulterated ghee was being supplied,” he noted.
Shyamala Rao said, “If we buy ghee for such a low price, we can’t get quality ghee. After we found out what was going on, we warned the concerned suppliers that we would blacklist them if they continue to supply sub-standard raw materials. Since then, quality has been improved by all suppliers, except one supplier, AR Foods, which was blacklisted.”
