Kolkata: A court in Kolkata's Sealdah framed charges Monday against Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder of a 31-year-old resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College 86 days ago on Aug 9. The move clears the path for daily in-camera hearings, set to begin on Nov 11.

Kolkata police arrested Roy a day after the crime, while CBI assumed charge of the case three days later. On Oct 7, CBI submitted a 45-page chargesheet detailing evidence against Roy, supported by statements from 108 witnesses.

If convicted, Roy could be sentenced to life imprisonment or the death penalty. "I am completely innocent. I am being framed," Roy shouted repeatedly from the police van as he was transported back to Presidency Jail under tight security. "I have been silent so far. But I did not commit the rape and murder." Roy was a civic volunteer at RG Kar hospital.

In court, Roy's lawyer Sourav Bandyopadhyay focused on procedural issues, alleging that key evidence, including photographs of the crime scene and CCTV footage, had not been shared with the defence.

The court rejected a bail application filed on behalf of former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh, accused of conspiring to destroy evidence and sheltering Roy.
